Umbria Yoga Retreat with Crystal of the Velvet Mat

Italy

Picture this: you land in Rome, roll out your mat with a group of new friends, and finish the evening over wood-fired pizza and wine in the Eternal City. Tomorrow, you’ll walk the same stones as emperors and gladiators through the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Then the city falls away, and the hills of Umbria, the “Green Heart of Italy,” open up around you.

This is where the pace slows down. Our home for the retreat is a secluded, eco-conscious wellness sanctuary set across seven private acres of oak forests and olive groves. You wake to birdsong and cool morning air, then ease into yoga on an outdoor wooden yoga deck as the sun climbs over the countryside, or in the panoramic indoor shala with sweeping forest views. Then lace up your boots for woodland trails with views that stop you mid-step. One day you’re wandering the cobblestone streets of Assisi, a hilltop town that feels untouched by time and another you are following the trail of a truffle hunt through the woods. Spend the afternoon by the outdoor panoramic pool, sun on your skin, with nowhere to be. Stay in a charming Italian guest house or a luxury glamping tent, and let the magic of the Umbrian countryside settle in.

Every evening ends the same way: an evening practice, a long farm-to-table dinner outdoors of nourishing, organic, vegetarian dishes from our retreat chef, good conversation, and the sun going down over the vineyards and olive groves. No crowds. No rushing. Just movement, food, beauty, and people who get you.

On your final morning, you’ll take one last sunrise walk through the quiet hills, coffee in hand, already knowing you’ll carry a piece of Umbria home with you.

This isn’t just a vacation. It’s the reset you’ve been needing, and the story you’ll be telling for years. Your mat is waiting.

This trip includes end-to-end transportation from when you land at the airport until we drop you off, all ground transportation, all activities, and all meals. It does not include your flight, alcohol, gratuities, or optional trip insurance.

Crystal Kage is the founder of The Velvet Mat Underground, a yoga studio and community rooted in movement, connection, and a little rebellion in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, Florida.

A RYT-500 yoga teacher, Crystal completed her initial 200-hour certification through CorePower Yoga and continued her education with advanced 300-hour training in Costa Rica. She is also NASM certified in Group Fitness, Personal Training, and Corrective Exercise, with a Black Belt in Hapkido (HIYA!) and experience in various martial arts disciplines.

Her approach to movement draws from all of it. Strength, flexibility, balance, power, and mindful movement come together in classes designed to challenge the body, quiet the mind, and remind people that fitness doesn't have to feel like a chore. Crystal believes movement should make you feel strong, empowered, and maybe just a little unstoppable.
But Crystal has never been one to stay inside the lines of a traditional yoga studio.

With nearly two decades of experience in merchandising, marketing, and event production, she has a knack for turning an ordinary class into an unforgettable experience. From rock 'n' roll-inspired flows and themed yoga events to live music, community collaborations, and wellness retreats, Crystal brings creativity, humor, and a whole lot of personality to everything she creates.

After teaching throughout Atlanta and Tampa Bay, she founded The Velvet Mat to create something she felt was missing: a welcoming, inclusive space where yoga feels less intimidating, community feels more authentic, and everyone is invited to show up exactly as they are.

Today, The Velvet Mat Underground is more than a place to practice yoga. It's a community of curious souls, yoga misfits, movement lovers, music enthusiasts, creatives and people looking for a little more magic in their everyday lives.
Crystal's philosophy: Come for the movement. Stay for the magic.

And, of course...

Stay sexy, and do yoga.
